Carmen Herrera – Lines of Sight

2 December 2017 – 8 April 2018

K20 Grabbeplatz

With its largest exhibition to date of works spanning seven decades, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen presents the Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera, who is regarded as one of the pioneers of geometric abstraction in America. The exhibition features around 70 works across the fields of painting, printmaking and sculpture, dating from 1947 to 2017. The artist, now 102 years old, was long ignored by the art market: she sold her first painting at the age of 89. To this day, she continues to produce powerful works with a strong visual impact in her New York studio. ‘Carmen Herrera – Lines of Sight’ was organised by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The exhibition in Düsseldorf is a collaboration between the Whitney Museum and the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen.

In co-operation with the Kunstsammlung Northrine-Westfalia the filmmaker Ralph Goertz was asked to produce a documentary on the cuban-american painter Carmen Herrera, who is one of the pioneers of color field painting and geometrical abstraction.
