Thomas Wrede

Thomas Wrede (*1963 in Iserlohn-Letmathe) studied at the Kunstakademie Münster and, in 1991, with Dieter Appelt. He is one of the most distinctive voices in staged landscape photography in Germany.

In his series “Real Landscapes”, Wrede places model-making elements – houses, trees, vehicles – in real landscapes such as beaches, mudflats or snowfields. Through his choice of viewpoint, model and reality merge into dreamlike, unsettling images that question how we see nature and how it is staged.

Ralph Goertz met the artist in the exhibition FOTO – KUNST – FOTO. From Julia Margaret Cameron to Thomas Ruff at the Clemens Sels Museum Neuss (27.10.2024–23.02.2025).
